Our Focus - Tidewater Turners is a non-profit organization located in Norfolk, Virginia. The purpose of our organization is to promote the advancement of woodturning skills for our members and other interested persons through an open exchange of knowledge, ideas and information. We also strive to increase public awareness of woodturning as a popular craft and as an art form.

David Ellsworth came to the Tidewater region and put on a one day demo for the Tidewater Turners at the Woodcraft at Janaf on 30 May 2010. Shown demonstrating his method of centering a rough shaped section of log by eye.
He measured from the top of the lathe to the edge of the work. He also noted the location of the pith as well as features of the log, such as grain and top of rim for natural edge. He would then adjust first the live center, then the drive center by half the distance of the difference in height in order for the finished
piece to be balanced and the heartwood equal on both sides. It seems simple but was based on his vast experience in turning wood. See more of David here (NOTE - more photos posted as they come in).
